My Experience Doesn't Fit in One Box. Neither Should Your Solution.

Throughout my life, I've frequently made choices that go against the grain in one way or another.  In high school I was near the top of my class, a lover of math and science, most people in my life assumed I'd choose the Ivy League route, then pursue a career in something like law.  Instead, I chose a prestigious private art school to study design because I'd always been fascinated by the intersection of the arts, psychology, and our physical environments. I grew up in a small town in Alaska, and despite the pressure to move back home after college like many others did during the Great Recession, I chose the more difficult path of building a new life in California, spending my weekdays chasing the sometimes elusive dream of succeeding in corporate America, and most of my weekends and vacation time snowboarding competitively.

Two decades later, I’ve continued to choose anything but the traditional career trajectory. My experience spans the commercial real estate and  design and construction industries in a wide range of roles, including designer, vendor, subcontractor, project manager, owner’s representative, and consultant. I’ve worked with Fortune 500 companies, small businesses and startups, as well as clients in the healthcare, education, and government sectors. Working across different disciplines and roles has given me a deep understanding of the financial, strategic, operational, and aspirational  challenges that often plague real estate projects. My decision making and problem solving are guided by these multiple perspective, which I wouldn’t have gained by staying in one lane.

Dalman Consulting was born from the recognition that although each organization I worked for or with were trying to solve unique problems, the challenges frequently resulted from a desire to assign the resolution to a single department or discipline. Those problems are then frequently exacerbated by the fact that real estate and capital projects are inherently cyclical, and resource needs and budget approvals don’t always follow the same timelines. I wanted to create a way to bring my breadth of experience to organizations that need it, without forcing them to choose between hiring a full-time employee or assembling a collection of specialized providers. Bring me your problem, and let’s figure out what comes next. The answer might be strategic guidance, project leadership, a stronger process, an experienced mentor, or simply another point of view.
